Intermittent bright problem fix

I'm sure it is a common fault, had it on both of my astras. When using the indicator or driving over a bump with you lights on, the brights come on. Simple solution, instead of replacing the unit from GM.

  • Remove the top and bottom plastic surrounds behind the steering wheel.
  • There are two screws at the bottom.
  • There are two screws directly behind the steering wheel, one on each side.
  • Once those are removed unclip the indicator unit and pull out. There is a clip on top and one underneath. Press both of them in and pull it out.
  • Unclip the plugs from the back of it. There are two separate ones, a clip holds each one on.
  • Before opening up the unit put a cable tie through the two small holes in the side. This will hold all the components from popping out when you open it.

  • There are 6 clips holding the cover on the unit. You need 2 or 3 small screwdrivers and some patience to pry it open. Do it carefully/slowly.
  • The cable ties should hold all the bits in the bottom in place.
  • Remove the indicator lever.
  • You will see a small arch in the lever. It gets worn out. See white part in pic. It allows you to flash your brights. The plastic gets eaten away it does not allow you to press the copper arm below to activate the brights when flashing.

  • Cut a piece of the cable tie and glue it flat in that arch/hole. The cable tie should not be too thick otherwise the brights will be on all the time. Just thick enough so that the arm and metal make contact when you pull your lever forward. The small cable ties are just the right size.
  • Put the lever back. Put the top back/clip into place.
  • The small spring and white plastic is there to turn the indicator off when the wheels are straight. Put these back on.
